The Franklin Lofts

Eighteen months ago we made “The Franklin Lofts” our home and we couldn’t be happier!

Living one block from “Eat Street”, Nicollet Ave, puts us within walking distance from a great selection of diverse restaurants from downtown to uptown. The Walker, Children’s Theatre, Minnesota Institute for the Arts, Orchestra Hall, The Convention Center, Target Center, the Humphrey Dome and more are walking distance for us to take in a concert, a play or a sporting event. Minneapolis parks, walking and biking paths are all within a short distance for us to enjoy.

Eat Street Story

June 14, 2006

In the spring of 2005 I noted with interest that an office building on the 100 block of Franklin Avenue E. that I had long admired was being converted to condominiums. The structure, built in 1950, was a classic, modern, mid-century office building. It had broad, aluminum-framed windows and a gorgeous wood-paneled entry lobby with terrazzo floors. As an architectural historian who had been considering buying a condominium, the prospect of living in such an architectural gem was intriguing.

Equally intriguing was the building’s location. The South Nicollet-Eat Street area struck me as one of the few remaining great, undiscovered neighborhoods in the city. Just south of downtown Minneapolis, the area was once home to many of the wealthy industrialists who made Minneapolis into a lumber- and flour-milling capital at the turn of the twentieth century. Their mansions, which populate Franklin, LaSalle, Blaisdell and Stevens Avenues, remain as important icons of the city’s history. Today, the neighborhood is more diverse and funky than any of those lumber or flour barons could have imagined – a fact that makes it appealing to those who, like me, seek a dynamic urban living experience.
